Yesterday in Reykjavík, a cooperation agreement was signed between Grænafl, based in Siglufjörður, and South Korean partners to collaborate on the electrification of Iceland’s coastal fishing fleet. HS Orka and Rafall are also participants in the project. HS Orka’s role will be to develop the charging infrastructure required for the fleet and, at a later stage, supply electricity to day-trip fishing vessels in harbors around the country.
Yesterday marked a significant milestone for the project, which has now moved from the planning phase into the production phase after approximately two years of preparation by Grænafl. The partnership with the South Korean companies initially involves the development and conversion of the Icelandic fishing vessel Oddverji SI. According to current plans, the vessel is expected to enter service next summer. Funding has been secured to begin production activities both in Iceland and South Korea.
Kolbeinn Óttarsson Proppé, CEO of Grænafl, has stated that although additional charging infrastructure is still needed in Icelandic harbors, sufficient electricity is already available to support the fleet’s energy transition. The electrification of Iceland’s coastal fishing fleet could reduce carbon dioxide emissions by tens of thousands of tonnes.
In the autumn of 2024, HS Orka and Grænafl signed a cooperation agreement covering the installation of charging stations for smaller fishing vessels and collaboration on energy transition initiatives. As part of Grænafl’s efforts to promote the electrification of smaller fishing vessels, charging stations are being established for day-trip fishing boats in harbors across Iceland. HS Orka and Grænafl are working jointly on this project, which previously received support from the Icelandic Energy Fund.
HS Orka has played an active role in the energy transition through the installation of fast-charging stations for electric vehicles throughout Iceland in partnership with InstaVolt. The company also offers charging solutions for businesses and individuals, enabling convenient home charging at competitive rates.
