Sunna Björg Helgadóttir, who has led the Technical Division at HS Orka for the past five years, has been appointed CEO of Rio Tinto in Iceland. She will take over from Rannveig Rist this spring; Rannveig has served as CEO since 1997.
Sunna Björg brings extensive and diverse leadership experience, including in the aluminium industry and energy production. She knows Rio Tinto’s operations in Iceland well, having begun her career there as a summer employee and later working continuously for the company from 2001 to 2015, most recently as Manager of the Potrooms.
Under Sunna’s leadership at HS Orka, the Reykjanes Power Plant was expanded by 30 MW in 2022, and significant expansion and upgrades were carried out at the Svartsengi Power Plant, where a new turbine unit was commissioned at the end of last year. She also led the company’s first deep exploration drilling project at Sveifluháls in Krýsuvík last summer.
Sunna will be greatly missed within HS Orka’s management team, but one leader steps in as another steps out: Yngvi Guðmundsson, Chief Engineer at HS Orka, will assume her position at the beginning of March.
All of us at HS Orka warmly congratulate Sunna and are extremely proud of her achievements. We wish her every success in her new role.
