Jón Ásgeirsson, Executive Director of Strategy and the Resource Park at HS Orka, has been appointed Director of Energy Affairs in the Ministry of the Environment, Energy and Climate. The appointment took effect at the turn of the year. The Energy Affairs Office is newly established and forms part of extensive structural changes within the ministry. In total, four new office director positions were filled at the turn of the year, as announced on the website of the Government Offices of Iceland.
Jón has worked at HS Orka for six years, during which he has led the company’s strategic development and overseen the implementation of several important internal changes. He has also represented the company and the energy sector both domestically and internationally. Within the Resource Park, Jón has led a wide range of development projects and negotiations, including initiatives related to the energy transition through the utilization of geothermal CO₂.
Before joining HS Orka, Jón spent more than a decade with Rio Tinto in Straumsvík, where he served, among other roles, as Manager of the Casting Plant. He then spent another ten years in Paris and Montreal, holding various leadership positions in sales and marketing, procurement, and business development.
His appointment is a significant gain for Icelandic public administration, bringing with it deep expertise and broad experience. In addition to his diverse background, Jón has extensive knowledge of energy affairs and has represented HS Orka in several joint initiatives among Icelandic energy companies aimed at safeguarding Iceland’s interests and raising awareness within the European Union about the nature, value, and importance of geothermal energy in the energy transition. Jón also contributed to the preparation of the Our Climate Future conference recently held in Brussels.
Jón will be greatly missed at HS Orka, and we extend our sincere thanks for his excellent collaboration and leadership over the past years. We wish him every success in his new role.
