Electricity was restored to the community in Seyðisfjörður around six o’clock this morning when HS Orka’s Fjarðará Power Stations were switched to island mode. Operations are running smoothly and remain stable. Power was lost around two o’clock last night due to icing on Landsnet’s transmission lines, and severe weather has delayed fault detection and repairs.
This is the first time the Fjarðará stations have been operated in island mode following a failure in the transmission system. Early in 2024, HS Orka carried out extensive upgrades and modernization of the control systems at the stations to make it possible to operate Seyðisfjörður as an isolated grid. These improvements significantly increased electricity security for residents of Seyðisfjörður.
While island mode is active, the Fjarðará stations do not supply electricity to Landsnet’s main transmission system.
HS Orka purchased the Fjarðará Power Stations in late summer 2023 and has since carried out various improvements, including a full renewal of the control systems.
